I strongly argue that for rural development in India as it is considered to be the foundation of national development. They state that India’s economy is predominantly rural in character with nearly 70 per cent of its population living in over 600,000 villages. More than 60 per cent of its workforce is engaged in agriculture and allied activities in rural areas). The rural sector also provides raw materials for India’s agro-based industries, and a large market for industrial goods. The export of rural produce is an important source of foreign exchange for the country.

Rural development has been one of the priority goals of Dutch development co-operation. Rural development projects were seen as important drivers of development, as they provided the inputs for industrial development and increased export earnings, and contributed to food security’.

It is interesting to note that even the investments made on rural roads and rural education have an effect on reducing urban poverty in addition to achieving the reduction of rural poverty. Thus it becomes necessary to promote rural development in order to reduce poverty in the country as a whole.
